Back Propping Crane Trucks - Feature Image

Crane trucks are often an essential part of construction projects, loading, transporting, and unloading heavy products and equipment. However, the weight of crane trucks can vary depending on their size and what the truck is carrying, with weights ranging from 6 tonnes to 100 tonnes.

These heavier crane trucks may be unable to access or operate on certain construction sites, like buildings, concrete slabs, bridges, etc., due to their significant weight exceeding the load-bearing capacity of the underlying structure without additional support methods, like back propping.

What is back propping a crane truck?

Crane truck back propping is a type of back propping technique that refers to the vertical transfer of loads, often through multiple levels of a building or structure through to the ground slab, to allow for the high load of a crane truck to be able to sit and move across suspended slabs without impacting the integrity of the concrete it’s sitting on or moving across.

The props are placed underneath a crane truck’s outriggers, which are retractable hydraulic ‘legs’ that spread out horizontally from the truck to help stabilise it. The positioning of the props helps to spread the loads created by the crane truck through the outriggers down the structure or the building that the truck is sitting on.

By using props such as our range of Modular Props or Titan Props, back propping ensures that extremely heavy crane trucks can sit safely on structures without collapsing the structure and damaging it, what’s underneath, and the crane truck.
