A customer in Adelaide contacted Shore Hire to help create a bespoke engineered solution for a heritage-listed building undergoing demolition and refurbishment.
The building was located on the main shopping street in Rundle Mall in Adelaide’s CBD, and the customer needed to retain the building’s façade and internal walls whilst also creating new openings in the walls. This posed a challenge because our team would need to work in the centre of the busy city whilst safely propping up a large building.
We needed to develop a solution that took into consideration the safe demolition of the walls of the building, the fact that Needle Beams were being installed 10 metres high, that props would need to be installed on concrete stairwells, and that all of this would need to be done whilst working alongside a demolition crew.
Another challenge with this project was adapting to the unexpected changes often encountered with most heritage-listed sites. When demolition started, the building differed from the plans that were provided, requiring the Shore Hire team to adjust to what was actually on-site.

Shore Hire worked with third-party engineers to design the best and safest propping solution, which consisted of our Shore Prop 400s, Titan Props, Acrow Props, and structural steel Needle Beams.
These products were used in back propping and needling applications to support and maintain the building in various positions. We also needed to back prop the ground floor of the building because it was being used as a loading dock for trucks.
To ensure we were on top of any differences between the plans and the actual building, we made sure to provide fast turnaround times when delivering and installing products, minimising the customer’s downtime.
As a result of our solution, the demolition and refurbishment of the building was able to go ahead as planned and on time. This project highlights the critical role of bespoke engineered solutions in enabling the safe and efficient demolition and renovation of heritage-listed structures.
